Ask any student what they remember most from school and chances are it won’t be a maths test. It’ll be that trip where they climbed a cliff, scrambled through a gorge, or surfed their first wave. School trips stick with us – and when they take place outdoors, the learning goes far beyond the classroom.
Here in Wales, we’re spoiled for choice. With its dramatic coastline, gentle hills, and loads of safe spots for adventure, Wales is the perfect place for young people to learn by doing.
The Benefits of Outdoor Learning
Taking learning outdoors has been proven to make a real difference to pupils of all ages. A well-planned activity day isn’t just about burning energy; it’s about growing in confidence and developing skills that textbooks can’t always teach.
- Physical wellbeing – swapping screens for surfboards and hiking boots is great for health.
- Confidence building – stepping outside comfort zones shows children what they’re truly capable of.
- Teamwork & communication – from working out how to cross a gorge to cheering each other on, collaboration comes naturally.
- Curriculum links – geography, science, PE and even personal development all come to life outdoors.
Why Wales Is the Perfect Classroom
Wales has everything you could want for an educational adventure. The dramatic coastlines are made for coasteering, our rivers and gorges are ideal for exploration, and the mountains aren’t just scenic – they’re incredible teaching tools.
For schools across South Wales, Cardiff, Swansea, Bristol and beyond, our location in Porthcawl is easy to reach and safe for groups of all ages.
Activities That Inspire at Adventures Wales
At Adventures Wales, we design school trip experiences that are fun, safe, and memorable. Popular options include:
Coasteering

Coasteering is one of the most popular activities we run, and for good reason. It’s a unique blend of swimming, climbing, scrambling and cliff jumping, all along the spectacular South Wales coastline.
Pupils work together to navigate the rocks, encourage one another before making a jump, and discover wildlife in rockpools along the way. It’s a brilliant way to build resilience, self-belief, and trust in both themselves and their team.
Raft Building & Kayaking

For groups who love a hands-on challenge, our raft building and kayaking sessions are always a hit.
Pupils work together to construct their own rafts using ropes, barrels and wooden planks, learning teamwork, problem-solving, and a bit of creative engineering along the way. Once the rafts are ready, the real fun begins – paddling them out on the water and seeing if they float!
Kayaking is another great way to get students active on the water. Guided by our instructors, pupils learn the basics of paddling, steering, and water safety while exploring the coast or river in small groups. Both activities encourage collaboration, confidence, and plenty of laughter – all while enjoying the stunning Welsh scenery.
Surfing

Surfing is always a highlight for school groups. Catching a first wave is a moment pupils never forget, and it often sparks a lifelong love of the ocean.
With expert instructors and safe conditions, students gain water confidence, improve fitness, and learn perseverance (because falling off is part of the fun).
We also offer stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), including our giant SUP board that fits a whole group – perfect for teamwork, balance, and plenty of laughs out on the water.
Muddy Assault Course

For students who love a challenge (and don’t mind getting a little messy), our muddy assault course is a firm favourite.
Packed with obstacles, tunnels, balance beams and climbing walls, it’s designed to test teamwork, endurance, and problem-solving in a fun, safe environment.
Pupils cheer each other on as they tackle each section, learning how to support their classmates while pushing themselves to finish the course. By the end, everyone’s not just covered in mud – they’re buzzing with achievement and a real sense of camaraderie.
Paintball & Team Challenges

Not every school trip activity has to involve water or heights. Paintball and land-based team challenges are fantastic for strategy, leadership and communication.
Pupils quickly discover that teamwork beats going it alone, whether they’re navigating an obstacle course, solving a puzzle, or planning their next move in a paintball match. These activities build camaraderie and laughter, leaving groups with shared stories that bond them long after the trip.
Each activity is led by qualified instructors who know how to balance fun with learning outcomes.
